Overview
Working with Thomas Schlesser of Design Bureaux, the AVEC Highwood concept consists of combining a decommissioned boxing gym, a mechanic’s repair shop and a new urban infill structure into a Mediterranean restaurant that will seat over to 200 guests. A glass entry links the existing northern structure and the dining room addition with a canopy that stretches over the sidewalk signaling the main entrance along Highwood main street, Waukegan Ave. The brick façade wraps to the interior to evoke the indoor / outdoor atmosphere of the Mediterranean. High coved ceilings with limewash walls continue the airy ambience while warm, dim lighting provide an intimate glow throughout both the bar and dining rooms. A wine cellar style private dining room is planned as part of a future expansion into the southern structure.
Along with a 2,100 sf masonry addition between 2 existing masonry structures, full electrical, mechanical, fire protection, plumbing and AV system replacements were implemented.
