Overview
Partnering with Studio STL in Seattle, PFA designed a new child care facility for the YMCA for children ages 8 weeks – 5 years old. The facility also needed to double as a food pantry in the off hours with a multi-purpose room accessible to the pantry and the classrooms without compromising security. Additionally, the project was required to meet LEED Silver rating and comply with the Build America, Buy America Act.
Drawing inspiration from the local history as a maritime transportation and shipping hub, particularly for the timber and fishing industries, the facility was designed to be reminiscent of a marina utilizing timber frame construction. Allusions to native flora and fauna fill the central corridor and the classrooms open to a southern facing shaded porch connecting to the outdoor play space.
